(September 26, 1955 – June 7, 2014) 

Well done, thou good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy Lord. 

Thomas “Tom” Edgar Schultze was born on September 26, 1955 in St. Louis, Missouri to Edgar A. & Shirley (Cantrell) Schultze. He confirmed his faith in the Lutheran church on April 20, 1967. Tom graduated from Lutheran High North in 1973 and received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1977 from Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois. He ultimately received his Master’s Degree from the University of Houston. Tom was united in marriage to Robin L. Kittle on May 11, 1985 at her parent’s home in Sugar Land, Texas.

Tom’s life’s work was shaping and influencing the lives of thousands of students during his time as an educator and coach at St. Paul Lutheran School in McAllen, Texas, Ebenezer Lutheran School in St. Louis, Missouri, Lutheran High North in St. Louis, Missouri, Lutheran High North in Houston, Texas, St. Paul Lutheran School in Troy, Illinois, St. Mark Lutheran School in Steeleville, Illinois, St. John Lutheran School in Chester, Illinois, Our Redeemer Lutheran School in Houston, Texas, St. Mark Lutheran School in Houston, Texas, Immanuel Lutheran School in Giddings, Texas and St. Paul Lutheran School in Serbin, Texas. He was a member of the Lutheran Education Association and had served as the President of the Lutheran Basketball Association for the past 23 years. He coached the State of Texas 3-A high school state runner-up basketball team in 1988 and Houston Lutheran State Tournament Grade School Boy’s Runner-up in 1998. Tom had also been a basketball official at the college, high school and pro-am level.

Tom’s passion in life was the education and nurturing of the students he taught and coached. His other hobbies included basketball, fishing, shopping, counted cross stitch and antiquing. His love of antiques led to a job as an auction assistant with Jody Kalmbach auctioneers and a retail space at Whistle Stop Antiques in Giddings. He was an avid fan of any sports team that came from St. Louis including the Rams, Blues and especially the Cardinals.

Tom lost his battle with cancer but entered eternal life the evening of Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Seton Medical Center in Austin with his wife at his side.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Schultze and Shirley Schultze Schwartzkopf; his step-brother, Charles “Pete” Schwartzkopf and his mother-in-law, Mona Kittle.

Tom is survived by his wife, Colonel Robin L. Schultze, USAF, NC, SFN of Giddings; his step-father, Rev. Elmer Schwartzkopf of Glen Carbon, IL; his step-brothers and step-sisters, Louis “Skip” Schwartzkopf & his wife, Mary of Arlington, TX, Laury “Larry” Schwartzkopf & his wife, Burnadette of Overland, MO, Emmet “Nick” Schwartzkopf & his wife, Carrie of Glen Carbon, IL, Linda Hieber & her husband, Charles of Broken Arrow, OK, Cloyd “Chris” Schwartzkopf of Hazelwood, MO , Deborah Breeze & her husband, Richard of O’Fallon, IL, David Schwartzkopf & his wife, Patricia of Bridgeton, MO and Roxanne “Sue” Schwartzkopf of Frederickstown, MO; his father-in-law, Bob Kittle of Chanute, KS; his sisters-in-law, Lisa Schlinkert of Orlando, FL and Lori Killebrew & her husband, Leon of Roswell, GA; his brother-in-law, Robert Kittle & his wife, Desiree of Sugar Land, TX as well as several nieces and nephews. Tom is also survived by the numerous students who had the opportunity to be taught, coached and influenced by him.

Funeral services for Tom are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 13, 2014 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Serbin, Texas with Rev. John Schmidt, Rev. Keith Aschenbeck and Rev. Robert Tiner officiating. Graveside services will be held at 10:45 a.m. on Monday, June 16, 2014 at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri with Rev. Marty Springer officiating.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 12, 2014 from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and on Friday, June 13, 2014 from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The family will be present for visitation Thursday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers will be Carl Wirth, Robert Kittle, Jody Kalmbach, Michael Morgan, Eric Fisher and Ted Wolfram.

The 2014 tournament is set for March 19th-22nd, 2015. Please save the date. Once again, tournament and housing applications will be accepted beginning  January 1st, 2015. Tournament fees will can be paid beginning February 2nd, 2015.
